Where do I start?, Page 3

There are some things you'll need to keep in mind if the child you're carrying is a child of color, such as African American or Native American.

Not all agencies are created equal when it comes to placing children of color in adoptive homes. Because most hopeful adoptive parents are Caucasian, it can sometimes be difficult to find a home for a child of color, especially when the placing parents are requesting a match with a couple who is the same racial make up as the child.

There are agencies that specialize in placing children of color in adoptive homes. Most often, they place children who are of African American decent and they work with families who have educated themselves on the unique issues faced by transracial families. However, there are still some agencies that, for whatever reason, do not work with expectant parents who are expecting a child of color. Asking up front will eliminate any problems you might face.

If you're carrying a child of Native American decent, the issues you could face are all together different and more complicated. First, you need to find out if you or the father is listed on any of the tribal roles held by your associated tribe. If you discover that this is the case, you'll need to disclose this information to the agency immediately. Federal Act requires that children of Native American heritage be placed in Native American homes, unless approved otherwise by the Tribe. The name of this Act is called the Indian Child Welfare Act, commonly referred to as the ICWA. As a Native American, you may be required to find another qualified Native American family to adopt your child. Much will depend on how your tribe handles adoptions and working with an agency or attorney who is well versed in ICWA cases will be important for you.

As you can see, your situation may be unique and knowing in advance what you might face will help you as you move forward.
