Paying for Medical Care
As most people know, visits to the doctor, blood work and other tests can be expensive. If you don’t have the resources to pay these bills directly, don’t worry! There are several options that will help get excellent prenatal care for you and your baby at little or no cost. (If you are placing your baby for adoption, there’s a possibility that your healthcare expenses will be reimbursed by the adoptive parents.)
If you have your own insurance or you are listed on someone else’s health insurance policy (a parent, stepparent or spouse), the cost of your prenatal medical care and delivery may be covered. Check with the insurance company to see if your health policy has maternity coverage.
Social service agencies
These agencies are organizations that provide a variety of services to people in need. Many of these agencies are supported by religious organizations, such as Catholic Social Services, Lutheran Social Services, Bethany Christian Services, Jewish Family Services, and L.D.S. Family Services. Most of these agencies do not require that you share their religious faith, but only that you do have some type of religious belief system.
Government funded healthcare
You may qualify for public healthcare if you do not have private insurance and/or you have little or no income. Some states provide prenatal and delivery care for any person who is pregnant. Check your state’s welfare guidelines to see if you qualify for this free healthcare.
Note: If you make a commitment to an adoption plan, state law may allow financial assistance provided by adopting parents to cover medical expenses related to the pregnancy. For more information, see Financial Assistance.
