During your first prenatal visit your doctor will probably write a prescription for a special prenatal vitamin. This prescription of vitamins and minerals has been specially formulated to meet your growing baby's nutritional needs, as well as your body's needs during your pregnancy.

The diet and supplements recommended by your doctor should be sufficient. Don't take any additional vitamins or supplements unless your doctor has recommended that you do. Too much of some vitamins can harm you and your baby (see: "Too Much of a Good Thing.")

Folic acid, calcium, and iron are other nutrients you need to have during pregnancy. Each one plays an essential part in the normal formation of your baby and in your health during pregnancy.

There are also things you will need to avoid during your pregnancy (see: "Steer Clear").

Staying healthy is important for both you and your baby!
