Discomfort During Pregnancy: Swollen Ankles

A common discomfort of pregnancy is swelling (dependent edema) of the extremities. You may find that your ankles, feet and hands become swollen in the last few months of your pregnancy, although some women experience swelling earlier. Be sure to tell your doctor if you notice swelling, because it can be a sign of increased blood pressure and pre-eclampsia.

Your doctor may recommend any of the following ways to decrease your swelling:

  • Increase the amount of protein you are eating.
  • Increase the amount of water you are drinking.
  • Decrease your salt intake. Don’t eat salty foods or drink carbonated beverages, which generally contain a lot of sodium.
  • Rest several times a day with your feet elevated higher than your heart.
  • Wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes.
  • Try applying ice packs to your legs and feet several times a day.
  • Swimming can sometimes reduce the discomfort of swollen ankles and feet.
