Discomfort During Pregnancy: Heartburn
If you are experiencing heartburn during your pregnancy, it may be due to increased pressure in your abdomen caused by the growing baby. Hormones in pregnancy may also be causing the muscle at the top of the stomach (lower esophageal sphincter) to relax, which will allow food and digestive acids in your stomach to back up into your esophagus.Ask your healthcare professional which antacids are safest to use during pregnancy. He’ll want you to stay away from the antacids that are higher in sodium. Before you take any over-the-counter drugs like Pepcid, Tagamet or Zantac, find out if your doctor thinks these medications are safe for your baby.
On your own you can try decreasing your heartburn by eating five or six small meals through the day instead of two or three large ones. Smoking, alcohol, high fat foods, chocolate, peppermint, spearmint, and foods or drinks containing caffeine can all contribute to heartburn. Some people benefit from avoiding spicy foods, while other people are not bothered by them. Also, don’t lie down until an hour or two after you have eaten. When you do lie down, prop your head and back up with pillows, so that your upper body is elevated higher than your stomach.
